Acorn Alphabet Matching Game

Alphabet Activities that get the whole body moving are our favorites. I love to create simple activities that kids can do semi-independently that get them learning and exploring.

This week we used some foam acorns to create a simple Acorn Alphabet Matching Game. The goal of the activity was to have fun exploring alphabet letters and match the foam acorns to the alphabet acorns on the paper.

Materials Needed:

  • Foam acorns (I got mine at Michaels- they are from Creatology)
  • Black marker
  • Painter's tape
  • Large roll of paper or wrapping paper

Prep Ahead:

Tape a large roll of paper onto the floor and secure it with painter's tape. After that you'll want to draw acorn outlines all over the paper and outline them with your black marker. Next draw alphabet letters inside each acorn and on each foam acorn. There should be a match for each acorn.

To Play:

I just left out the acorns and large paper with acorns on it and my preschooler started matching the letters and putting them in their correct spots immediately.

My toddler also joined in and just had fun matching acorns to the acorn spots... even though they didn't match the right alphabet letter.

While my preschooler matched the alphabet letters we talked about what each letter said and we reviewed the alphabet letter names on the acorns. Once we finished the activity we moved the acorns around and played again.

Along with this activity we read the book Aw, Nuts! by Rob McClurkan that we were sent to review by Harper Collins.

Aw, Nuts by Rob McClurkan tells the story of a squirrel's adventure to catch the perfect acorn that has bounced away. The squirrel has a lot of mishaps throughout the story that my kids thought were pretty funny too as he tries to get the acorn back. My kids also really enjoyed the photos.

Disclosure: Harper Collins gave us a copy of Aw, Nuts! to read and review for free. All opinions are my own.

  1. How do I unsubscribe and stop receiving Toddler Approved Facebook posts?

    1. Nancy you go to the top of the Toddler Approved Facebook page and click where it says "Liked" and change it to "Unlike" then you won't receive them any more. Sorry to see you go!

  2. Great idea! Love the way this could be adapted to fit any theme. Thanks for sharing!
