Best Kids Crafts of 2011- Pinterest Edition

I have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest. It is full of amazing ideas and yet it can suck so much time away from my day if I just sit down and start browsing. I seriously love it though. It has changed my life.

For this edition of "Best Kids Crafts of 2011,"I'll be featuring the top five posts that were pinned the most during 2011.

1. Pom Pom Gloves Tutorial- You know you want to make a set before the Super Bowl to support your favorite team.

2. Sponge Towers- Block tower building has never been so quiet and fun at the same time.

3. Fall Leaf Baggie Painting- This technique can be used with any theme and is perfect for the littlest toddlers!

4. Gratitude Turkey Treat Jar- This was so much fun to make and even more fun to give away. I need to do a snowman version next.

5. M&M Wreath- This post is probably the most popular post of all time on Toddler Approved. I am so glad EJ created yet another excuse for me to use candy in projects. Now she needs to make ones of these templates for every holiday. :) Fall wreath, Valentine's Day wreath, etc.

Alright, so now that we've shared our most pinned posts... what are yours?

How We Do Our Nativity

I have enjoyed reading about how Kristina has been focusing on a "Christ Centered Christmas".  Today, I thought I'd share one way we try to bring the spirit of Christmas into our home.

Setting up the Nativity is one of my favorite Christmas traditions.  For as long as I can remember it would be the last thing we did on Christmas Eve (my parents wanted us to remember why we celebrated Christmas as we drifted off to sleep).

My mom created a simple script that includes carols and text briefly describing each of the characters of the Nativity.

We separate the parts and put them in a box (to be passed around by the youngest member of the family).

Each person takes a turn selecting a part and reading it aloud -

then we all sing the selected song as they choose where to place the corresponding nativity piece.

This is a tradition that all 5 of my siblings and I continue to carry on in all corners of the United States (and in between) on Christmas Eve.  It is a such a nice break from the commercialization of Christmas and an easy way to teach our children (and remind ourselves) the true meaning of Christmas.

I've linked the text and songs here.

Saving Holiday Photo Cards

I have a hard time throwing things away, especially cards and letters - so I find myself with a large collection after the holidays that I'm not sure what to do with.  I've seen some fun ideas for how to recycle Christmas cards such as this wreath, card puzzles, monogram labels, ornaments and garland.  However I have a stack of beautiful photo cards that I would not dare cut into or throw away . . .

While I love this idea for making a photo collage or adding them to the family scrapbook - I wanted to find a simple way to keep the photo cards together (that also allowed a way to add more as we received them).
Solution: hole punch and a binding ring.

I used the photos printed on thicker paper to demonstrate how to use the hole punch then gave a stack of photo cards on thinner paper to my daughter to punch on her own.  This was a great activity to increase hand/grip strength.

Choosing how to order the photos on the binding ring took quite a long time - and we have had so much fun going through the photos (and can easily add more as they come)!

How do you store/display your photo cards?  What do you do with them after the Holidays are over?

Mommy and Me Book Club: Frosty's New Friends

We had our December Mommy and Me Book Club session yesterday and it turned out great.

The book was just one that we had around the house that my son liked. It is called Frosty's New Friends and it is by Richard Cowdrey. The main reason I chose it was because it had lots of pictures, a very basic storyline, and pretty simple words. Our group ranged in age from 2-5 today, so I wanted to make sure to keep the attention of the younger kids.

Here's a brief outline of our day:

Gathering Activity:

- Snowman name hunt- Each kid's name was on a piece of the snowman and hidden around the room. Each child found their piece and chose a spot for it to go on the snowman. It was fun to see them work together to build the snowman. He is a California snowman, so he needed sunglasses. :)

Music:
- Welcome song
- I'm a little snowman (sung to the tune of "I'm a little teapot")
- Once there was a snowman (with actions)

Story: Frosty's New Friends by Richard Cowdrey

Snack: Snowman on a stick (make sure to cut the tips of the skewers... they are sharp! We learned that the hard way).

We mostly just used ingredients we had around the house- bananas, pretzels, mini-chocolate chips, apples, marshmallows, and sprinkles.

Activity:
Snowman building with M&Ms from Confessions of a Homeschooler

We investigated the M&M patterns... and snuck some treats too.

- Snowball making and throwing: The kids made snowballs out of paper, tried to aim and throw them into baskets, and then played "catch the snowball" with a partner.

Craft:
- Muffin Wrapper Snowmen- I loved the variations. I didn't give them a model, so each one was different. I had fun creating my own during naptime because they looked like so much fun to make!

My son made his with four arms and HUGE eyes. :)

Closing:
- Goodbye song and then it was playtime while the moms got to chat!

Do you have a favorite snowman craft or activity?
I would love to share it as part of a snowman round up I am doing in January... so put the link in the comments.

Creative Christmas Countdown: Create a Snow Village (or two)

Today is Day 19 of the Creative Christmas Countdown and we will be sharing with you how we created TWO Snow Villages to play with at our house! We are so excited to be participating in this countdown with 23 other fabulous bloggers!

I have never had a snow village but thought it would be a fun decoration to have at our house, so we decided to create something that looked good and was fun to play with/eat too! :)

Here are the two creations we came up with...

1. A Snow Village made out blocks

2. A rice crispy Snow Village

Here's how we created them...

Block Snow Village
Materials Needed: blocks, scissors, white cardstock, pastel and white paint, paint brushes, packing peanuts (or cotton balls or white tissue paper), double-sided tape, markers, and glue

1. We gathered up blocks from our block bucket and traced them onto white paper. We have these Melissa and Doug blocks, but any blocks will work.

2. Mix up some paint and paint your block outlines. I learned that if you cut them out after you paint, the paper doesn't roll up at the edges as much.

3. Cut out some white triangles to use as roofs (or paint some like we did) and grab some packing peanuts (or other white fluffy items).

4. Cut up the packing peanuts

5. Glue them to the roofs.

6. Let everything dry and then cut everything out.

7. Attach the pieces to the blocks using double stick tape.

8. Make some trees using green cardstock half circles and staples. Add some white puffy paint to create snow.

9. Cut out doors and window panes. Draw lines on the windows and then stick them on to the houses.

(We also made a railroad track to go on the top of our tunnel block)

10. Work together to set up your scene and then grab your friends to come play.

Watch out! The Lego men sure know how to throw snowballs!

Thomas and friends didn't want to be left out either!

We had such a fun afternoon playing with our snow village!!

 Rice Crispy Snow Village
This village is much simpler and yummy!

Materials Needed: box of rice crispies (any version), wooden spoon, bag of marshmallows, butter (6 tablespoons), candies to decorate with, ice cream cones for trees, sprinkles, frosting (homemade or store bought- we were lazy and just bought some), plastic knife, and a house template (if you want one, email me toddlerapproved@gmail.com), and a cookie sheet.

1. To create our rice crispies we followed the directions on the box... they were too gooey, so if I were you I would follow this recipe to make your rice crispy treats so that they are firm and don't collapse.

2. Once the treats were done I flattened them out in a cookie sheet and then cut around my templates to make the house pieces.

3. Next I set them aside and put them in the fridge for about 20 minutes to harden up (while we snacked on the remnants!)

4. Then we added frosting and put the houses together. We made three houses total.

5. Then we started decorating!!

6. To make the snowy tree we just frosted the ice cream cone with white frosting and then dropped lots of green sprinkles on it!

7. We also did a lot of sampling :) Here is my son claiming his territory!

(For one house we mixed some cocoa in the rice crispy treats to change the color of the roof up a bit!)

After about an hour of standing, our gooey houses collapsed (the roofs sunk in), which is why I would recommend using the recipe above (and not using the recipe on the box like I did). :)

The goal of this activity was the experience, not the end product though... so my son didn't care AT ALL about the destruction.

He has spent practically every moment since we made these on Saturday trying to sneak more tastes. :) Definitely a successful and fun activity!

I don't know why I never thought to make a rice crispy "gingerbread house" before... It was so delicious!

Wowzers! That was a long and detailed post. I hope you enjoyed these little villages that we created. Thanks for stopping by!
