Super Heroes & Sight Words

Decided to take advantage of the Word Girl kick from Halloween and incorporate being superheroes with our sight reading activities.

This week we have been focusing on learning words from the Dolch Word List.  I tried to choose words that had a "superhero sound" to them (help, jump, look, away, etc.).  We cut out "superhero shapes" (basically comic book type word bubbles) to write our words in.
I would write a word, then have my daughter copy the word as we talked about the letters that made up the word, how to pronounce it, and what it meant.

We next played a matching game with our word set until she was comfortable identifying each of the words.

Then we put on our superhero capes and flew outside - along with our sight words and a box of snappers - for the featured part of the activity, "Snapping Out Sight Words".

I would call out a word and my daughter superhero would through her snapper at the appropriate word as fast (and as hard) as she could.
We tried "snapping the words" on the ground and up against the wall (using the wall seemed more effective).

This ended up being such a fun and active way to learn sight words (and I'm still wondering what my neighbors thought about all of the noise we created at 8 in the morning).

  1. I love this! Last year, Ryan and I did something similar with paper rain puddles. He was in a rain boot phase and we wrote the words on blue paper rain puddles and hopped from word to word. I have to get the snappers and let him try this next week! So cool!
